If you haven’t read the release notes consider this a heads up. If you are planning to install or upgrade your Environment Manager to Version 8 FR4 you will not be surprised that support for SQL 2000 has been removed. If you are still using SQL2000 it is recommended to upgrade your database (compatible versions below) before you attempt an EM upgrade. Hands up, fair cop. In a recent blog post on scripting Internet Explorer Favorites I forgot to mention using script exit codes when I dealt with the custom actions. Any custom script you include in your configuration is always interpreted as completing successfully by the agent on exit unless you specify otherwise in your code. Well this is certainly something we wanted to do in our environment. Based on different group memberships and user requirements for different web apps we wanted to post links into the users favorites folders in Internet Explorer. Historically, users managed their own app shortcuts in the Favorites folder but this led to inconsistencies especially when a url was updated server side. We decided to publish a folder called “!Corporate” in the users favorites folder. This folder (if sorted alphabetically) would appear at the top of the users favorites and we would leverage the ability to run vb script from an Environment Manager trigger. We could then add/delete/modify urls and keep a consistent-corporate approach to managing these items. Adobe have a nice – longstanding problem with their preview handler in the 64bit version of their reader. We installed Foxit Reader into our Gold Windows 7 64bit image which replaced the already installed Adobe preview handler. This worked a treat, our customers could now preview PDF documents in Explorer and the Microsoft Outlook 2010 preview pane. We needed to personalize the Foxit App with AppSense. In this blog Ill explain how to add a new App to personalization and some specific includes and excludes for Foxit Reader. Hey, Ben here. I’m sitting at home today nursing a poorly baby with a fever so i thought i’d throw this quick article together out on how to use Microsoft ICACLS to set folder/file permissions using AppSense Environment Manager. ICACLS is a neat tool included in Windows 7/Server 2008 OS that allows you to view and modify the access control lists for files and folders on your NTFS file system.

We use ICACLS all of the time in our environment, especially when introducing new users to the system for the first time. We use it to build home drives and setup their personalized user environment PUE..thats neat..PUE..just made that acronym up! 🙂

Warning: This post may ruffle some feathers! I will start out by saying that AppSense have a great product called “Application Manager”. It is designed to take on User Rights Management, Application Control and Software Compliance Monitoring, more info can be found at http://www.appsense.com/products/desktop/desktopnow/application-manager/

That being said, there may be a scenario when you would like to use EM invoke Taskkill when it sees an unauthorized process being launched. Let me say again, I will always advocate Application Manager for this job but I also want to show you how flexible EM can be in your environment..look at it as broadening ones horizons.

Ok, so we want to capture users Taskbar/Start Menu and Toolbar Information on Windows 7? There are 2 ways to do this, either use the in built “Desktop Settings” option to capture the information automatically or hive the items and reg keys out manually with policy. We are going to personalize these settings using reg hive and folder copy actions. At the current time of writing this blog there is no conditional flag (AppSense feature team please can we have one) that can be set on session data or desktop settings. You either have it on or off for your personalization group and we need the conditional flexibility for our environment.
