When a user logs on and launches Microsoft Outlook, some profile information is lost. The most obvious side effect for us was the user losing their Outlook Signature.

AppSense DesktopNow offers the tech heads among us a wide range of Event IDs that can be generated from the endpoint CCA (Client Communications Agent). Some are classed as “High Priority Events”. These are non configurable and are sent direct to the AMC (AppSense Managment Centre) database via HTTP from the endpoint when they are generated. Other, configurable, events are sent by the CCA to the AMC database during the default poll period set on the distribution group.

Microsoft Office 2010 can be personalised with AppSense Environment Manager. AppSense have a “Best Practice” guide which is available from www.myappsense.com. The guys did a good job with it and we used it as a baseline. Most of the information here is reflected in the guide but, and please don’t drag me over the coals, we do some of the %appdata% folder includes\excludes differently, and I’ll explain why.

We came across this problem after installing DesktopNow in a sandbox training environment. After installing the necessary prerequisites and subsequently the DesktopNow components we tapped in the AppSense Management Server URL to verify the AMC had successfully been installed.

Adobe Reader can be personalized using AppSense Environment Manager. Here are some simple steps to create a new User Application for Adobe Reader in the Environment Manager Console and a tip to keep your SQL admins happy. No session data or Desktop Settings saved at Logoff? We came across this particular problem on about 30 of our Windows 7 PCs. They were all born from the same Gold image as the other working 300 or so desktops (we are about half way through our Windows 7 migration) but these few PCs all presented the same issue. We were seeing no Session Data, Desktop Settings or Logoff actions completing at User Logoff.

Antivirus software…I liken it to those bead screens that hang down from your back door. Most of the time they don’t bother you and just get on with the job of keeping out the flies but when you want to go through them you end up re-living a scene in an episode of LOST when the beads “come alive”. AV is the same, most of the time it just sits there behaving nicely but every now and then it just plain becomes annoying. To avoid any “John Locke” jungle moments, below are some exclusions to add to your AV scanner when using AppSense Environment Manager:-

So I have quickly learned that I can satisfy a lot of my “membership” conditional triggers by referencing a registry key rather than looking up the Active Directory. This is especially useful on “Computer-Start-up” triggers. In my experience, when the computer boots, the network is not always ready by the time we kick off a conditional trigger for Computer Group Membership. If the network is not ready and we try to look-up our AD on “Computer Start-up” then that condition will fail. So how can we get around this?

Hands up, fair cop. In a recent blog post on scripting Internet Explorer Favorites I forgot to mention using script exit codes when I dealt with the custom actions. Any custom script you include in your configuration is always interpreted as completing successfully by the agent on exit unless you specify otherwise in your code.

If you haven’t read the release notes consider this a heads up. If you are planning to install or upgrade your Environment Manager to Version 8 FR4 you will not be surprised that support for SQL 2000 has been removed. If you are still using SQL2000 it is recommended to upgrade your database (compatible versions below) before you attempt an EM upgrade.
